Golf's next phenom? Petrillo making his case

Iona Prep freshman Felix Petrillo Jr. posted the jaw-dropping round of the season last month. And last Monday, the rising golf standout took home some impressive hardware.

Petrillo followed up last week’s staggering round of 6-under 30 at Pelham Split Rock in an Iona Prep team match by claiming the prestigious Hendricken Invitational title with a 1-under 68 on Monday at Warwick Country Club in Rhode Island.

The Harrison resident was 2-under par on the front but fell back to 1-over after 15 holes. Petrillo then birdied the 16th and 17th holes to get back under par and secured the title with a par on 18.

“Felix is a freshman who plays with the composure and demeanor of a senior,” Iona Prep coach Steve Herman said. “His golf skills are matched by his etiquette and sportsmanship. He is so good at everything that you forget how young he is.”

It’s been quite a season for Petrillo, who has been one of the top golfers all season for the Gaels. Petrillo turned heads recently when he broke the CHSAA single-round record with his 6-under par 30 last month at Pelham Split Rock, setting a CHSAA record for the lowest score ever to par.

On the season, Petrillo has taken over as the No. 1 player on Iona Prep’s roster and is 10-1 on the year in match play. He has a 0.5 scoring average to par entering the final week of the season, starting with today’s match versus Eastchester at Leewood Golf Club.

“This is just a beginning of phenomenal things he is going to accomplish,” Herman said. “He has a chance to be a generational talent.”
