Bracketology FAQs
How is Bracketology Calculated?
Qualifying for the Section 1 playoffs takes into account ALL games played on a team’s schedule. Teams are ranked from highest Index to lowest in each classification.
The formula:
- Wins in Section 1 are worth 4 points
- Ties in Section 1 are worth 2 points
- Bonus Points are determined from the winning percentage of a team’s schedule of Section 1 opponents only.
- Overall winning percentage (.500 – .749) = 1 bonus point
- Overall winning percentage (.750+) = 2 bonus points
- Add up all points accumulated and divided by the number of Section 1 games played to calculate Index
- In baseball, Developmental teams cannot give Bonus Points regardless of record
Qualifying for the Postseason

In soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, a team needs 26 points to qualify.

In basketball, ice hockey, softball, a team needs 32 points to qualify.
Points are obtained as follows:
- Each win is worth 4 points

- Bonus Points from Section 1 only opponents is based on their overall winning percentage:
- Overall winning percentage (.500 – .749) = 1 bonus point
- Overall winning percentage (.750 and higher) = 2 bonus points
Note: Developmental League teams in baseball can qualify for the postseason but are automatically seeded behind the last qualifying non-Developmental League team
Seeding Tiebreaker
- Head-to-Head (if teams played same number of times)
- Common opponent (if teams played same number of times)
- Overall average of bonus points earned by the number of games played in Section 1 *
- Winning percentage
- Total number of wins (in Section)
- Total number of wins against qualifying teams in your respective classification
- Total number of wins against top 4 seeds in classification (or of those teams above you)
- Random draw (1st team drawn)
When three or more teams are tied, the criteria above will be followed until the first tie is broken that separates a team from the top or bottom at which point the tie breaker system begins back at Criteria #1 for the remaining teams.
