The effects of the growth of women’s basketball can be directly seen in the level of talent we’re seeing in Section 1 girls hoops. We’re seeing college offers at nearly every level on a weekly basis for girls in our region and the future continues to look bright. KDJ kicks off his Five Stars of the week with two sensational freshmen who faced off in the first game of the Slam Dunk Showcase last weekend.
Maddie Becerra, Pleasantville, Freshman
Becerra lead Pleasantville to a 61-56 win over defending Class C champ Tuckahoe in the Slam Dunk Showcase this weekend. The freshman standout filled up the stat sheet across the board for the Panthers with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists.
Chloe Angello, Tuckahoe, Freshman
Angello was unstoppable in a 61-56 defeat against Pleasantville in the Slam Dunk Showcase. The 9th grader scored 34 to go with 10 rebounds in one of the most impressive individual performances of the weekend.
Carly Voce, Clarkstown South, Junior
Voce has been a force for the Vikings all season and dropped 25 points in a comeback road win at Mamaroneck on Saturday. The junior star holds offers from D1 schools like Marist, New Hampshire and Iona, and has the Vikings sitting at 5-4 in Class AA (3 of those 4 losses were to AAA Ursuline and Albertus Magnus).
Sofia Tavarez, Panas, Senior
Panas took home a 61-46 win over Ursuline in the Slam Dunk Showcase this weekend behind 29 points from their senior point guard. The Connecticut College commit shot 11 for 17 from the floor and battled through illness to carry the Panthers with fellow star Cadence Nicholas on the bench with foul trouble.
Joie Levy, Senior/Madison Bortstein, Junior, Ardsley
Our last Five Star performance for the week is a shared award between Ardsley guards Joie Levy and Madison Bortstein who did all of the little things to help the Panthers to a big win at the County Center on Saturday. St. Bonaventure commit Iva Corluka was dominant in the paint as usual and took home MVP honors, but the 5’4′ Levy’s 14 rebounds and Bortstein’s shot making down the stretch were vital in the win.
