Iona Prep falters in opener, falls at Delbarton in football showdown

Delbarton might have graduated the core of last year’s team that reached the New Jersey State Non-Public championship game. But the return of Philip Folmar was enough to give the Iona Prep defense fits on Saturday afternoon.

Folmar, a senior committed to play at the University of Buffalo, had 238 yards receiviing and three touchdowns to lead Delbarton to a 34-7 win over Iona Prep in Morristown, NJ in the season opener for both teams.

Crew Davis scored the lone touchdown for Iona Prep, which trailed 13-7 late in the second quarter before a Folmar touchdown before the half slowed the momentum.

Folmar scored on a 95-yard touchdown reception on Delbarton’s second play from scrimmage to make it 7-0. Then his 65-yard catch down to the Iona 5 on the next drive set up another Green Wave touchdowns.

Steven Dowdy Jr. caught several passes from Gaels quarterback Julian Guzman, who was making his debut. But the Iona Prep offense struggled for the most part to sustain drives against the Delbarton defensive front.

Iona Prep returns to action on Saturday when they go on the road to Massachusetts to take on power Springfield Central.
