Section 1 girls basketball fans have known Walter Panas star Sofia Tavarez for a while, as the senior guard was All-Section the last two seasons on the 2023 team that won the Class A NYSPHSAA State Championship and last year’s state finalist squad. Tavarez recently eclipsed the 1,300 point mark, and has the Panthers at 13-1 and the No. 1 spot in the current playoff rankings.
Off the court, Sofia is an accomplished student, earning multiple student of the month honors while maintaining high honor roll status. A member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and winner of the Atticus Finch Leadership Award, she also is dedicated to working with youth in the community through the Panas summer basketball camp and math tutoring elementary students.
Next year, she will be continuing her education and basketball career at Connecticut College. Congratulations to Sofia on an incredible career and earning this week’s ConEdison Scholar Athlete of the Week Award.
