Mamaroneck back on top: Tigers claim first section title since 2019

After a pair of heartbreaking defeats in the Section 1 championship the last two seasons — and a three-goal deficit early on Tuesday — Mamaroneck wasn’t about to let another title slip from its grasp.

Behind a stellar defensive effort and a core of sophomores up front, Mamaroneck reclaimed the Section 1 championship, beating an upstart Carmel squad, 14-9, in the Class A final at Yorktown High School for its first title in five seasons.

Luke Brennan, a senior, got the Tigers rolling with a first quarter goal. But Carmel, playing in its first ever championship game, found momentum. The Rams scored three in a row before a Brian Auker goal slowed things momentarily. Carmel (15-3) extended its lead to 5-2 before the Tigers seized control.

Jude Meisner and Jake Reese, a pair of sophomore standouts, pulled Mamaroneck (13-6) within one, and then Meisner tied it with a pretty lefty finish. In the final minute of the half. Jake Reese and Jared Rabina scored from straight out beyond 20 yards, giving the Tigers a 7-5 advantage at the break.

The second half belonged to Mamaroneck. Brennan and Reese scored to keep the kead before an Owen Reese goal from Jake put the Tigers ahead 10-7. Brennan’s third goal was later followed by a crushing Rabina goal with five seconds left in the third.

Carmel was out of gas in the fourth. Miesner and Carson Winters rounded at the scoring for Mamaroneck.

The Tigers move on to the NYSPHSAA Class A Regionals on Saturday in Amsterdam against the Section 2 champion. That game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
