The Somers football team hasn’t lost to a Section 1 opponent since the 2019 Class A championship. The now 37-game winning streak was about a yard and maybe a fortunate whistle away from being broken.
Miguel Iglesias hit Dean Palazzolo for the go-ahead touchdown with under three minutes to play as Somers held off a fourth-quarter comeback from Yorktown for a 16-12 victory at home on Friday night.
A minute earlier, Somers nearly fumbled at the goal line, which Yorktown recovered. But the officials ruled that the runner’s knee was down before the ball came out. Three plays later, despite a holding penalty that pushed the Tuskers (2-0) back, they went back ahead.
Yorktown, which trailed 10-0 in the fourth quarter, nearly had a heroic comeback effort from quarterback Kaden Gonzalez. After being kept in check for three quarters, Gonzalez led the comeback with a pair of touchdown passes; one to Tyler Galante (6 receptions, 60 yards) and the other to Johann Moeritz (4 rec, 69 yards).
Gonzalez passed for 240 yards and the two scores.
Iglesias passed for 73 yards and the touchdown and Mason Kelly ran for 81 yards on 21 attempts. Bret Kennedy led the defensive with 5.5 tackles, a sack and an interception.
Yorktown outgained Somers by a 254-165 yard margin.
