The creation of the Class AA “Super League” has done pretty much exactly what we had hoped for when it was announced. With only two weeks left in the regular season, we’ve seen an incredibly balanced, highly competitive league where the top five teams seem capable of beating anyone on any given night. Last night’s thrilling North Rockland win over previously unbeaten Scarsdale was a perfect example of how Class AA is producing playoff caliber matchups week after week.
Heading into Thursday night, Carmel’s place in that Class AA picture was a bit uncertain. The Rams had lost two weeks ago on a back breaking last second FG at home to Mamaroneck and took another tough defeat at North Rockland last week.
Last night at home against rival Arlington, things looked bleak once again, as two early turnovers lead to a 21-7 deficit late in the first half. Despite the challenging start, Coach Brendan Connolly’s squad would respond resoundingly, coming back to win 41-28 on a 34-7 scoring run to close the game. Connolly told GameDay One after the game, “The team showed a lot of resiliency, trusted their coaches and stuck to their game plan. With multiple starters down, we had younger players step into prominent roles and they did excellent jobs. We were happy to be able to send the seniors off with a win in their last regular season home game”.
Senior QB Brian McGrory continued his stellar play for the Rams going 18 for 29 with 291 yards passing and 4 TD’s. Thomas Connolly and Teddy Galbraith each had TD receptions, and Aiden White lead the Rams in receiving with 160 yards and 2 TD’s. Tamba Kassoh was a workhorse on the ground for the Rams, carrying 13 times for 116 yards and 2 TD’s after senior star Tristan Werlau left the game with an injury.
Carmel continues their trudge through the Super League gauntlet traveling to 4-1 Scarsdale next Friday night at 6pm while Arlington hosts 3-3 Suffern.
