Carmel title defense opens with high-octane win over John Jay-East Fishkill

Three-time defending Section 1 Class AA champion Carmel looked like a team eyeing a run at a fourth on Friday night.

The Rams opened the 2024 season in style, defeating John Jay-East Fishkill 45-34 behind a stellar effort from Tristan Werlau and a potential breakout effort from quarterback Brian McGrory.

Werlau, a senior running back, proved unstoppable both on the ground and through the air, rushing 11 times for 193 yards and two touchdowns while adding five receptions for 76 yards and another score. Werlau was just as impactful on defense, recording three tackles, including a tackle for loss and a sack.

McGrory orchestrated the Rams’ offense with poise and precision, completing 13 of 17 passes for 287 yards and four touchdowns. McGrory spread the ball around to his talented receiving corps, making it difficult for John Jay to key in.

Thomas Connolly was McGrory’s primary downfield target, hauling in four catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Connolly also made his presence felt on defense, adding five tackles. Aiden White joined the offensive explosion with three catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns, while also contributing on defense with eight tackles, two pass breakups, and an interception.

The game was a high-scoring affair from the start, with both teams exchanging early touchdowns. Carmel took control in the second quarter, though, as Werlau ripped off a long touchdown run and McGrory found Connolly and White for key scores to give the Rams a cushion. John Jay fought back, but Carmel’s defense came up with timely stops in the second half to secure the win.
