Mount Vernon deals New Rochelle first Section 1 defeat; reigning champs back in the hunt

The historic rivalry between Mount Vernon and New Rochelle in boys basketball has only one real constant: just when you think you have the pulse in the matchup, you get games like Friday.

Mount Vernon avenged an ugly loss at New Rochelle from two weeks ago, dealing the Huguenots their first Section 1 defeat of the season in the process, winning 55-49 at home for their third straight victory.

Watch video highlights of the game here:

Kai Harvey scored a game-high 20 points, taking the game over the second half as Mount Vernon (10-4) erased a six-point halftime deficit. Harvey also had six assists.

Tavien Tyler added 11 points and Will Robinson scored nine in the win for the defending Section 1 Class AAA champions, who still have games left on the road against rivals Scarsdale and Mamaroneck next week.

New Rochelle (11-3) will look to regroup on Saturday when they host Spring Valley.

The Huguenots, which handed Mamaroneck its first defeat of the season this week, are still the top seed in the latest Bracketology standings on GameDay One. Find the full standings here.
