The eerily similar way the fourth quarter unfolded on Friday night compared to last year’s meeting between Somers and Ramapo (N.J.), this time, yielded a different result.
Somers saw a comfortable lead in the second half dwindle before the Tuskers held on in the final seconds for a 40-35 win at home – one year after losing on the road to the New Jersey powerhouse on a Hail Mary as time expired.

Ramapo stormed back from a 40-14 deficit midway through the third quarter and had possession in the final minute. But the two-time state champion Tuskers came up with their second consecutive defensive stand to preserve the opening night victory.
The win for Somers came on the night when the school renamed its turf to Tony DeMatteo Field, honoring the former head coach. DeMatteo coached for 22 years at Somers, highlighted by his 2016 state championship, and accumulated 320 wins and seven section titles in his 52 total seasons between Roosevelt and Somers.
Miguel Iglesias passed for 270 yards on 14 of 22 completions with three touchdowns in his first career start at quarterback for Somers. He also ran for a touchdown.
Dean Palazzolo caught eight passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns, and Mason Kelly added 96 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 26 attempts.
