NYSPHSAA Regional Finals – Saturday
Class A
Mamaroneck Avenges Early Season Loss To Claim Regional Title
Shenendehowa took an early season trip on April 13th down to Mamaroneck and came away with a decisive 10-5 victory against the eventual Section 1 Class A champs. This Saturday in Amsterdam, however, the Tigers defense and youth movement would turn the tables and stifle the Plainsmen in a 7-5 regional championship win. Mamaroneck boasts roster full of underclassmen and the growth of key contributors like sophomores Owen Reese and Carsen Winters has been vital to the Tigers postseason run.
Looking Ahead: Wednesday, June 5, 4pm, Ford Field (Albany)
Section 1 Mamaroneck (NYSSWA #12) vs. Section 8 Farmingdale (NYSSWA #5)
Long Island’s Farmingdale coasted 17-1 in their regional final against Monroe-Woodbury and are lead by Albany commit Brendan O’Keefe and Bryant commit Caden Lennon. The Dalers have played top Long Island teams all season and their only Section 1 game was a 7-4 win over Class Haldane. Mamaroneck is not the same team that started the season back in March, and the young Tigers might just be ready for the moment.
Ryan’s Pick: Mamaroneck 11, Farmingdale 10
NYSPHSAA Regional Finals – Saturday
Class B
Yorktown Gets Revenge on Niskayuna, Heads to Final Four
Last year, Yorktown claimed their first Section 1 championship since 2017, but was shut down 7-4 by Section 2’s Niskayuna in the regional finals. The Huskers had a young core last year and have developed their own identity this season and have been clicking of late with the return of injured playmaker Drew Weissman during sectionals. Ryan Vogel and Brady Sheridan netted four and three goals for the Huskers respectively, while Weissman added two goals and two assists.
Looking Ahead: Wednesday, June 5, 5:30pm, Fallon Field (Albany)
Section 1 Yorktown (NYSSWA #6) vs. Section 8 South Side (NYSSWA #1)
Yorktown has their hands full in the State Semifinals, matched up against the USA Lacrosse No. 24 nationally ranked South Side Cyclones. The Cyclones have beaten teams like Manhasset (Class B No. 4), Garden City (Class B No. 5), Cold Spring Harbor (Class D No. 1), and beat Somers 14-9 in April. The only common opponent is Cold Spring Harbor, who the Huskers lost to 7-6 at home in April. The Huskers have been working well on offense of late, but South Side might just be too much in the end.
Ryan’s Pick: South Side 13, Yorktown 9
NYSPHSAA Regional Finals – Saturday
Class C
Rye Coasts in Regional Final, Looks Ahead to Another Long Island Semifinal Matchup
Rye made easy work of Section 2’s Queensbury in a 16-3 romp in Saturday’s Class C Regional Final. This Garnets team has high D1 talent in Senior Tyler McDermott (Princeton) and Juniors Chris Iuliano (Notre Dame) and Tucker Hess (Villanova), but it was 4 goals from 8th grader Will Niejadlik and 3 scores from Freshman Garrett Sullivan that lead the way on Saturday.
Looking Ahead: Wednesday, June 5, 6:30pm, Ford Field (Albany)
Section 1 Rye (NYSSWA #5) vs. Section 8 Bayport-Blue Point (NYSSWA #1)
Rye has lost in the State Semifinals to Long Island powerhouse programs Manhasset and Garden City the last two seasons. This year they get Section 8’s Bayport-Blue Point who sit at No. 1 in the NYSSWA Class C State Rankings and No. 14 in the USA Lacrosse national rankings. The current Phantoms senior class has five D1 commits and hasn’t lost since May 1. The Garnets have been expecting this matchup and played a schedule that has helped prepare them for this moment. I think Rye hangs tough but the Phantoms pull it out in OT.
Ryan’s Pick: Bayport-Blue Point 11, Rye 10 (OT)
NYSPHSAA Regional Finals – Saturday
Class D
Pleasantville Moves On To Semifinals Against Familiar Opponent
Pleasantville controlled most of Saturday’s Regional Final against Section 2’s Schuylerville, but the Black Horses pulled the game to an 8-6 deficit late in the third quarter. Pleasantville saw a long dry spell lead to the evaporation of a large lead in the Section Final against Bronxville, but were determined to not let that happen again. The Panthers would pull away in the fourth, scoring five unanswered goals to close the game. Nick Reich lead Pleasantville with 4 goals, while Daniel Picart had 3 scores and 2 assists. Sophomore David Hundzynski continued his stellar play winning 15 of 23 faceoffs.
Looking Ahead: Wednesday, June 5, 3pm, Fallon Field (Albany)
Section 1 Pleasantville (NYSSWA 2) vs. Section 8 Cold Spring Harbor (NYSSWA #1)
Pleasantville would probably be lying if they said this rematch wasn’t in the back of their mind since last season. The Panthers met Cold Spring Harbor in last year’s state semifinal and were sent home in a frustrating 7-3 defeat. Pleasantville has played a schedule designed to prepare them for this type of game. Matchups against teams like Garden City and Shoreham-Wading River have given the Panthers the confidence that they belong on the field with anyone. The only common opponent between the two teams this season is Garden City, which Pleasantville lost 11-6 and CSH lost 12-5, so these would seem like very evenly matched squads. I think this group of Pleasantville seniors finds a way to will the Panthers to a win in an incredibly close, back and forth game.
Ryan’s Pick: Pleasantville 10, CSH 9
