Somers leaves no doubt: Tuskers are Dome-bound

In each of the last three games, there was a fear that the Somers football dynasty could have been derailed. On Friday night, the Tuskers showed they might be a better team because of it.

The two-time defending New York State championship overwhelmed Cornwall for a 35-0 victory in the NYSPHSAA Class A Semifinals at Middletown High School, punching their ticket to the state title game for the fourth year in a row.

No team from Section 1 has ever made four straight state championship appearances until now. Somers also has the chance to match Edgemont (1998-2000) as the lone Section 1 program to ever win three straight championships.

Mason Kelly ran for 91 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries for the Tuskers (13-0). Miguel Iglesias passed for 134 yards on 8 of 12 completions with a touchdown. The senior quarterback also ran for 55 yards and a score.

Cameron Violante, a sophomore, caught a touchdown, and junior star Dean Palazzolo had 6 catches for 89 yards.

Bret Kennedy came up with an interception, and Timmy Monahan led the defense with nine tackles.

Somers will take on Whitesboro in a rematch of last year’s Class A state final, which the Tuskers won, 35-6, last December. They’ll meet on Friday at 6 p.m. at the JMA Dome at Syracuse University.
