Stepinac Stunner: Crusaders upset Iona Prep for CHSAA lacrosse championship

If you watched the first meeting between Iona Prep and Stepinac back on April 11, there’s no way could have envisioned how Thursday’s CHSAA championship would have played out.

Four-time champion Iona Prep was that dominant in that regular season matchup. And Stepinac looked completely overwhelmed.

But thanks to a healthy face-off man, a veteran attack, a mature group of defenders and an outstanding performance by a goalie, Stepinac pulled off arguably the biggest upset in their CHSAA lacrosse history. The Crusaders defeated the top-seeded host Iona Prep, 14-9, for the AA title.

Watch the video recap from this game here:

Aidan Bross scored four goals in the win and registered two assists. P.J. Hodge had three goals and two assists, and Tommy Cotrell and Cole Mayclim also each had a hat trick. Denny Piekutowski made 14 saves for Stepinac, which improved to 9-10 on the season.

Crew Davis had four goals for Iona Prep.
