Wrecking Crew: Davis scores four times, leads Iona Prep over St. Anthony's

Crew Davis has flashed this season as both a running back and as a receiver for the Iona Prep offense. The junior may never have been better in those roles than he was on Friday night.

Under the lights at Iona Prep, Davis scored four touchdowns — two rushing and two through the air — to lift Iona Prep to a 48-40 win over St. Anthony’s in a CHSFL shootout before a large crowd in New Rochelle.

Davis’ night was highlighted by an 81-yard catch and run in the third quarter that extended Iona Prep’s one-point halftime lead. He later darted in from nine yards out to extend the lead as the Gaels offense did everything it could to keep St. Anthony’s QB Gary Merrill off the field.

Merrill, an elite national lacrosse talent headed to play at the University of North Carolina, scored a pair of first quarter touchdowns to give the Friars (3-3) an early 14-7 lead. He also led a scoring drive just before halftime, throwing a beautiful score to Will Hart that kept St. Anthony’s in the game.

St. Anthony’s had trouble slowing the Iona offense in the second half. Brennen Pressley had a touchdown on the ground, and A.J. Zimmerman scored twice for Iona Prep, which built a late two-score lead. St. Anthony’s scored in the final seconds but was unable to recover the onside kick.

Iona Prep is back in action next Friday night against Cardinal Hayes in a rematch of last year’s epic CHSFL AAA Division championship game, which Hayes won. They’ll meet at Columbia University at 7 p.m.
