Yesterday’s matchup between NYSSWA Class D State No. 2 ranked Pleasantville and NYSSWA Class B State No. 7 Somers lived up to the hype as Pleasantville overcame an early deficit in an 11-10 OT win against the Tuskers.
Class D No.1 seed Pleasantville hadn’t played a game in which the score was closer than 14 goals since a 10-7 win at Shoreham-Wading River on Long Island on April 27th. The rust showed, as the Panthers spotted Class B No. 2 seed Somers a 5-0 lead early into the second quarter. Senior captain Daniel Picart and the rest of his teammates heard the wake up call soon enough, however, as they ran off 5 unanswered goals, including an Aiden Cotter score as time expired in the first half (we’ll come back to him).
Full game here:
Pleasantville would take control of the game in the third quarter, building a 9-6 lead, but Matt Mayfield, Mac Sullivan and Miguel Iglesias wouldn’t let the Tuskers go down without a fight, with Mayfield netting the equalizer with four minutes left in the game.
The Panthers would control the OT period, eventually scoring on a clutch Erik Coleman assist to Aiden Cotter to end Somers hopes of a road upset.
Pleasantville now awaits the winner of Putnam Valley/Irvington on May 20th for the Class D quarterfinals. Somers has the winner of Brewster/Clarkstown North in the Class B quarters on May 21.
